1 architectural drawingLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of the textual records of Carl Schaefer, documenting his career as an artist and teacher. There is some family material including family correspondence. The material is arranged in the following twelve series: Biographical and bibliographical material; Correspondence; Exhibition, sales and other financial records; Manuscripts and notes; Memorabilia; Printed material, reproductions of Schaefer's work; Printed material, exhibitions and other material; Printed material, clippings; Subject files, three series; and Writings by other authors, 1920-1995.
Fonds contains photographs, art work, and philatelic material related to events, activities, places, groups and individuals associated with the life and career of Schaefer, [ca. 1909-1994]. Photographs depict following subjects, 1945-1985: Carl Schaefer on various social occasions with Canadian artists such as Caven Atkins, David Blackwood, Pat Cowley-Brown and Henri Masson; Carl Schaefer teaching at the Schneider School of Fine Art in Actinolite, Ontario; Carl Schaefer at the opening of exibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario and at the Market Gallery in Toronto, Ontario. Photographs by Tanya Axiuk, Fred Brown, P. Goodwin, Gwen Kenny, Mark Schaefer and Ken Wilson.
Fonds also contains video recordings of Schaefer taken by his son Mark, on which Schaefer talks with Charles Comfort and Maurice Haycock, 1983; and a sound recording of an interview with Schaefer by Charles Hill and Rosemary Tovell of the National Gallery of Canada, 1990.

Morrison.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Schaefer, Carl, 1903-1995 : Carl Schaefer was born in Hanover, Ontario, in 1903. Following his studies at the Ontario College of Art, 1921-1924, he worked as an assistant to artists J.E.H. MacDonald and Emanuel Hahn and as an itinerant church decorator and sign painter. He taught art at the Central Technical School, Toronto, 1930-1940, as well as at Trinity College School, Port Hope. He held his first show in 1924 and exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists in 1925, with the Group of Seven in 1928, and with the Canadian Group of Painters in 1933; he was given a joint show with David Milne, Paraskeva Clark and Caven Atkins by the Art Gallery of Toronto in 1932. During the 1930s, Schaefer painted the Hanover, Ontario, landscapes for which he has, perhaps, become best-known. Schaefer was the first Canadian painter to be awarded a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and he spent 1940-1941 painting in Vermont near Dartmouth College, where he met the American artists Paul Sample and Ray Nash. He returned to teaching at the Central Technical School and Trinity College School, 1941-1943, then was invited to become an official war artist and enlisted with the R.C.A.F. in 1943. He was attached to various bomber squadrons in England and Northern Ireland until 1944, posted to Iceland and then Rockcliffe, and discharged in 1946. In 1948, Schaefer was appointed an instructor at the Ontario College of Art and taught there until 1970 During the 1950's he also began teaching at the Doon School of Fine Arts, along with Jack Martin and others, and began painting the countryside in Waterloo County, a landscape which inspired him as the country around Hanover had earlier. Schaefer received many honours and awards for his work during his lifetime. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, Canadian Society of Graphic Art, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, Canadian Group of Painters, and the International Institute of Arts and Letters. He died in 1995.Additional information:General note:Because the material in the Carl Schaefer fonds was received in several accessions over a period of time, there is a fair amount of overlap between series. Researchers should check all series carefully when trying to locate material, so as not to overlook related material in different series.
Part of the material was received in three accessions between 1979 and 1987 from Carl Schaefer; additional material was received in five accessions between 1994 and 2003 from his sons, Mark Schaefer of Stittsville, Ontario, and Paul Schaefer of Brockville, Ontario, and their wives, Rosemary and Carol.
