Fonds consists of journals, typescript consisting of Hantzsch's diary "Wie ich bei den Eskimos War: Reise in Baffin Land 1909-1911". The diaries are notable for their ethnological, ornithological, geological and detailed geographical data, original, 30 cm; miscellaneous records including photocopies of Hantzsch's sketch maps of Baffin Island, his six sketches of Inuit and Baffin Island, a report of Hantzsch's death, a German-Inuit vocabulary, and a photocopy of a biographical article on Hantzsch by M.B.A. Anderson, photocopy, n.d., 1910-1911, 1.9 cm.

The fonds also contains maps pertaining to the Foxe Basin Survey by B. A. Hantzsch.

Hantzsch, Bernard Adolph, 1875-1911 : Bernard Hantzsch, ornithologist and explorer, born in Dresden, was a preparatory school teacher. Early in his life he became interested in ornithology. His first expedition in 1898 was in the Danube basin in Slavonia studying the waterfowl of the Danube. Following a trip to Iceland in 1903 to investigate avifauna, he decided to make the Arctic his life's work. He undertook a study of the ornithology, ethnology, and geology of Labrador, 1906, travelling on the Moravian mission steamer Harmony. His written reports of this research were translated by M.B.A. & R.M. Anderson and were published in the Canadian Field Naturalist January 1928 - October 1932. He had many German publications to his credit. His writings were notable for keen observation and skill in depicting bird life.

His expedition to Baffin Island was sponsored by such notable patrons as King Friedrich August of Saxony, the Society of Friends of Natural History Investigation, and the Rudolf-Virchow-Stiftung Foundation of Berlin. His papers were copied in 1931 from the Geographical Society of Dresden. The original diaries were destroyed during World War II. Copies of Hantzsch's diaries and notes are available in the "Staatliches Museum Fur Volker Kunde", Dresden. The copy of "Wie ich bei den Eskimos war" found here however appears to be more complete than the Dresden copy.

The manuscript translated by Leslie H. Neatby was published under the English title, My Life Among the Eskimos, the Baffin land Journals of Bernard Adolph Hantzsch 1909-1911. Saskatoon: University of Saskatchewan, 1977. Extensive translations of Hantzsch's work are also available in the R.M. Anderson Papers (MG 30 B 40).
