Duff, Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant, 1829-1906 : Sir Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff was born at Eden, Aberdeenshire, on the 21 February 1829 to James Grant and Jane Catherine Duff. Educated at Edinburgh Academy, the Grange School and at Balliol College, Oxford (1847-50), he graduated with and B.A. in 1850, and proceeded with an M.A. in 1853. In 1954 he passed the bar with honours. In December 1857 Grant Duff was returned as Liberal member for the Elgin Burghs and held this seat until 1881 when he was appointed governor of Madras. Appointed on the 8 December 1868 as under-secretary of State for India under Gladstone, he then joined the 2nd Gladstone ministry as under secretary for the colonies in 1880. One year into his appointment Grant Duff accepted an offer of the governorship of Madras, this bringing to an end 24 years unbroken representation of his constituency in the House of Commons. Grant Duff published number articles, essays, and one anthology of the Victorian poets. His principal work was 14 volumes of a work entitled Notes from a Diary, published between 1897 and 1905. Grant Duff was married on 13 April 1859 to Anna Julia, only daughter of Edward Webster of North Lodge, Ealing. By Anna Julia he had 4 sons and 4 daughters. Grant Duff passed away in 1906.
