David Laird, member of Parliament, born in New Glasgow, P.E.I. was educated at Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Truro, N.S. He was editor of the Charlottetown Patriot, a member of the Charlottetown City Council and a member of the Commission inquiring into the management of Dorchester Penitentiary, 1898. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, 1871-1873, and a member of the House of Commons, 1873-1876, serving as Minister of the Interior, 1873-1876. He was Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Territories, 1876-1881, and Indian Commissioner for the North-West Territories, Manitoba and Keewatin, 1898-1914.
