Alabama Claims : The Alabama Claims were claims of the United States against Great Britain following the Civil War. These claims for compensation were directed against the vessel Alabama and indirectly against the other Confederate cruisers, which were British built, armed with English guns and manned by English crews, and thereby contravened the British Foreign Enlistment Act of 1819. The resulting damage to the American Merchant Marine was tremendous. As early as 1868 the United States had tried to arrange a settlement, but Britain was not willing to negotiate until 1871. The United States was awarded over fifteen million dollars in gold.
