Fonds consist of correspondence and miscellaneous papers including material concerning McGill's training of American flying boat pilots during the First World War, as well as correspondence with various Royal Canadian Air Force officers during the Second World War; post-war correspondence with the Directorate of History, Department of National Defence, Vice-Marshal Raymond Collishaw; and a letter from George Wakeman concerning the career of Group Captain Roy S. Grandy, n.d., 1918-1980.

The fonds also contains photographs relating to various aspects of McGill's career, ca. 1919-1979; including one photograph of Captain A. Roy Brown, Royal Air Force, at Officers' Convalescent Hospital, Ontario, 1919.

The fonds also contains a book of prints entitled, "Aeroplanes of the Royal Air Force", produced by the Leach Heritage of the Air Series; and prints by M. Coming entitled: "The Man who Wouldn't Die", "Ballroom Fern", "The Sargeant and the Cow", and "The Boy in the Dark Trunks", 1920-1964.

McGill, Frank Scholes, 1894-1980 : Frank S. McGill was born in Montreal, and educated at McGill University. He served in the First World War as a pilot and test pilot with the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Air Force. In 1913, he joined the firm Dominion Oilcloth and Linoleum Co. Ltd. and eventually retired as vice-president of sales. In 1939, he became Honourary Wing Commander with the Royal Canadian Air Force, and Wing Commander at the outbreak of war in September 1939. In June 1943 he was made Air Vice-Marshal, a position which he held until his retirement from the Air Force in 1946.

He was elected to the Sports Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Football Hall of Fame in 1965.

General note:

The letter from George Wakeman to McGill and the photograph of A. Roy Brown received in 1975 from Frank McGill through Air Marshal C.R. Dunlap. The remaining material received in 1981 from Mrs. Margaret McGill of Montreal, Que.

Some prints are copies from R.C.A.F. "PL" negatives now held by Canadian Forces Photo Unit; others are from R.C.A.F. "T" negatives which no longer exist.
