Fonds consists of an article sent to the Toronto Globe and the St. Paul Pioneer in which Newton Henry Chittenden discusses his voyage, June 1884, from Victoria to the Queen Charlotte Islands on the Hudson's Bay Co. Steamship Otter and describes the City of Victoria, the Nanaimo coal mines and missions to the Indians including that of the lay missionary William Duncan at Medlakatla, typescript, 1884. Also included is Chittenden's published report, "Hyda Land and People: The Official Report of the Exploration of the Queen Charlotte Islands for the Government of British Columbia", with annotations, the draft manuscript, memoranda, clippings and correspondence, photocopy, 1884-1911.

Chittenden, Newton Henry : Newton Henry Chittenden served in the U.S. Civil War with the Union, cavalry, attended Columbia College, New York, and was subsequently admitted to the bar. He then moved West to become a professional explorer, exploring the American coast from Canada to Mexico. Chittenden wrote several books and one report concerning Canada including "Hyda Land and People: The Official Report of the Exploration of the Queen Charlotte Islands for the Government of British Columbia" (1884), and "The Settler's, Miner's and Tourist's Guide from Ocean to Ocean by the CPR" (1885). He also wrote Circulars No. 9 and No. 14 of the "World's Guide for Home, Health and Pleasure Seekers", 1884 and 1885.

Received in 1983 from Edmund Carpenter of New York City. Copied from the original Chittenden Collection in the Rare Book Collection of the New York Public Library. The photocopy of the entire Chittenden Collection was sent to the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and transferred in 1984 by the Director, G.F. MacDonald.
