Macdonald, Charles Tupper, Wilfrid Laurier and Thomas D'Arcy McGee; correspondence from authors and journalists on various subjects; correspondence relating to family matters, 1825-1895; and correspondence from lecturers invited to address the Ontario Literary Society, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Charles Dickens, 1859-1861.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Belford, Charles, 1837-1880 : Charles Belford, born and educated in Ireland, immigrated to Toronto, Ont. in 1857. Belford was corresponding secretary of the Ontario Literary Society between 1860 and 1861. In 1864 he married Jennie Thomas. Thereafter, he joined his great-uncle James Beaty's paper THE LEADER, where he was editor-in-chief from 1867 until 1871. The following year he was appointed chief editor of THE MAIL, and in 1876 he co-founded the publishing firm of Belford Brothers, which published a journal of literature and art, BELFORD'S MONTHLY MAGAZINE, as well as British and American reprints. He resigned from the Mail and Belford Brothers in 1878 due to ill-health. In 1879 he was appointed secretary to the Dominion Board of Appraisers and moved to Ottawa. Belford died in 1880.
