She was the daughter of Alexander Fenton of New York and his wife Gladys (née Huntington). After the death of her mother, Mhairi Fenton made her home with her mother's sister Janet Evelyn Huntington, who had married her first cousin, Dr. Charles Stuart McEuen (d. 1956). She grew up in Scotland but lived in Canada after Dr. McEuen, a specialist in cancer research, took a post at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal.
Interest in the incidence of cancer among Eskimos led to Dr. McEuen's visiting the Arctic in the summer of 1937 with the Eastern Arctic Patrol of that year, aboard the R.M.S. Nascopie. The Officer in Charge and Government Representative in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago was Major D.L. McKeand of the Lands, Parks and Forests Branch of the Department of Mines and Resources. Despite the reluctance of the Hudson's Bay Company to take women on the expedition that year, Dr. McEuen's insistence on taking his wife caused it to change its decision and Mhairi Fenton accompanied her aunt and uncle on the trip. In 1976, Miss Fenton married Henry M. de Castro of the U.S. Navy, with whom she made her home in Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa.Additional information:General note:Presented in 1984 by Mrs. Henry M. de Castro, Ottawa, Ontario.Arrangement note:Three maps that were part of the donation were transferred to the Cartographic and Audio-Visual Archives Division at the time of acquisition.Location of originals note:Originals in the possession of the Federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs.Availability of other formats note:The Chateauguay church register in file 1 is also available on microfilm reel H-1807, from reel image 860 to 948 (end of reel).Varying form of title:Subject heading:- Quebec (Quebec)
