Fonds consists of correspondence of Robert Hoyle with his wife Eliza Nye Hoyle, 1831-1836 and 1840-1842, with a few letters to and from his daughter and others, 1826-1844, containing comments on the political and social affairs of the time, particularly during his years in the legislature, and on his personal and business affairs, 6 cm. Also included are lists of militia equipment and supplies and paylists kept by Captain George Hay and Lt.- Col. Hoyle, ca. 1837-1840, a petition of Robert Hoyle for an appointment, 1842, and an extract from his wife's diary, n.d., 24 pages.

Hoyle, Robert, 1781-1857 : Robert Hoyle, politician, businessman and public servant, emigrated in 1806 from England to New York, where he built a prosperous lumbering trade with Quebec. On the outbreak of the War of 1812, Hoyle moved to Lacolle, Lower Canada, developing and investing in land, mill sites and a ferry service. He sat in the Legislative Assembly for l'Acadie, 1830-1834, and served as Collector of Customs at Stanstead from 1834, and as Registrar of l'Acadie from 1835. During the Rebellion of 1837, he raised two militia units. Hoyle married Pamela Wright (d. 1825) with whom he had three children.
