Large (family) : The Large family was French in origin, and was known as DeLarge. They were Huguenots, and in the exodus which took place in the latter part of the 17th century, they were among the considerable number of Protestants who escaped to England, Ireland, Europe and North America. In England and Ireland the name was anglicized by dropping the "De", but there are still families of DeLarge in the United States.

Sometime in the early 19th century a John Large and his five sons immigrated to Prince Edward Island. John Large is reported to have been a senior officer in the British army during the Napoleonic Wars and is believed to have immigrated at the end of these wars in 1815. Some of his sons left Prince Edward Island and later settled in Listowel and Flesherton, Ontario.
