The I.C.W. was formed at an initial meeting in Washington in 1888. Mrs. Millicent Garrett Fawcett was elected the council's first president at that time. Lady Ishbel Aberdeen was elected president in 1893. The main objectives of the I.C.W. are to act as a means of communication and common action between women's organizations in all countries and to provide opportunities for women to meet and to discuss questions of common interest.
The I.C.W. originally met every five years, when it transacted business and elected officers. It now meets every three years. The executive includes five elected officers, president, vice-president, corresponding secretary, recording secretary and treasurer; the presidents of all affiliated national councils; conveners of standing committees; and vice-presidents appointed by the International Council for countries where no national councils exist.Additional information:General note:Received in 1979 from the National Council of Women in Canada.
