Collection consists of correspondence, and a few other family papers, such as the Rev. C.C. Cotton's will, of the Cotton family, 1786-1879. Most of the material relates to the Rev. C.C. Cotton, S.P.G. missionary at Dunham, Quebec, and to his family and descendants. The papers give much information on Cotton's background and motives for immigrating first to the U.S.A. and then to Canada. Contemporary conditions and politics in both countries are described and some account of notable events, such as the War of 1812 and Rebellion of 1837, is given. Transcripts, 333 pages.

Cotton, Charles Caleb (family) : The Rev. Charles Caleb Cotton (1775-1848) was educated at Eton and Oriel College, Oxford. After a brief curacy in England he immigrated to the U.S.A. where he served as a master at Charleston College, South Carolina, and then in various parishes in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, 1798-1804. He moved to Lower Canada, where he was ordained to the priesthood, and served as a pioneer missionary in the Eastern Townships, at St. Amand, 1804-1807, and Dunham, 1808-1848.

Received in 1978 from Mr. R.H. Cotton of Dunnville, Ont. and his sister, Mrs. E.L. Jenne of East Farnham, Que.

Location of originals note:

Carbon copies of typescript selections were made in 1932 by Mary Cotton Wisdom from originals held by her aunt Miss Minnie Cotton.
