Fonds consists of an account book kept by Donald Kennedy, whose varied career is reflected in the volume. It includes accounts from the cabinet shop, John Blyth himself and various public and private institutions, measurements for and accounts of the Aylmer Court House, and Kennedy's accounts with his servants, labourers, craftsmen, and businessmen in Ottawa.

The fonds also contains a map entitled, "Plan of the Town of Renfrew: the Property of William Ross, Esq. on lot 13 in the 1st and 2nd con. of the Township of Horton, [1854].

Kennedy, Donald, 1805-1888 : Donald Kennedy, merchant and builder, was born in Scotland, the son of Donald Kennedy and Catherine Ferguson of the Blair Atholl area in Perthshire. The family immigrated to Canada in 1818 and settled in The Derry Beckwith Township, Lanark Co., where Donald Senior was known for his skill as a woodworker. By 1838, with John Blyth, Donald Junior had opened a cabinet shop in Bytown; in the early 1840's he surveyed the Dalhousie District and mapped Bytown, although he was not licensed as a Provincial Land Surveyor.

In 1850, Kennedy won the contract to build the Aylmer Court House and Gaol, where upon he moved his family to that town for the duration of the contract. Kennedy had at least six children with his first wife Joanna, but by 1871 was living on his farm at Hartwell's Locks on the Rideau River near Ottawa with his second wife Hannah and a daughter.

The Cartographic and Architectural Archives Division has copies of two maps drawn by Donald Kennedy, namely a plan of Bytown in 1842 and a map of the Dalhousie District, 1843.
