Released from an institution after having burned down his home and accidentally killing his aunt, Dennis Pitt is found a job in a chemical factory by his probation officer. Dennis leads a fantasy life and when he meets high school student Sue Ann Stepanek he tells her he is a secret agent and his mission is to foil a plot to poison the towns water supply. Sue Ann, chafing under her mothers refusal to ler her do what she wants, agrees to help him and they go out one night to sabotage the factory. Things get out of hand when they are surprised by the night watchman. Sue Ann knocks the man out and drowns him. Dennis falls under suspicion for the murder because of his record and Sue Ann promises to run away to Mexico with him. They go to Sue Ann's house to get some clothes and money but her mother interrups them. Sue Ann shoots her mother and tells Dennis to get rid of the body. Instead, Dennis phones the police and gives himself up for the murder. At the trial, Sue Ann denounces him. Dennis says nothing because he knows he would not be believed. A few months later Sue Ann meets another young man and starts to complain to him of the restrictions placed on her by her foster parents.
