Interview of Einar Nordstrom by Helena Doherty for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Nordstrom talks about the necessity of establishing the Thunder Bay Co-op Dairy. It was organized mainly by Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) members, with assistance by Harry Bryan. It was the first dairy to be unionized. The International Co-op was different from most consumer co-ops, and was affiliated with the FOC, unions, and the Finnish left-wing movement. Nordstrom talks about the Co-op's involvement in cultural activities, and the business community's attempt to undermine it. Vigor (Tarmo) restaurant offered the cheapest meals in town, for 20 cents. It had lots of business, but credit sales were its downfall. Harry Bryan, organizer of trade union movement, had the whole city organized within three years. Nordstrom talks about the Finnish left-wing Movement; the unemployed movement; homesteading small privately owned dairies getting together; the Farmers' Co-operative Market Association; the Farmers' Mercantile; the Scandinavian Home Society; the People's Co-op; and the FOC, Finnish newspaper, bankruptcy, and interference from Government. Isku Park. He discusses the assassination of the Governor General of Finland. He speaks about the Labour movement; the Lumber Workers Industrial Union (LWIU) and problems organizing bushworkers; Imatra 9; strikes; FOC; and Port Arthur in the 1920s and 30s. He discusses the poor conditions, lack of medical attention, and hardships encountered by foreigners in bushcamps. He talks about Bay St., Port Arthur as it was in 1932 and earlier. The Carpenters' union was established by early the 1900s. Trade union movement in Port Arthur and Fort William. Poor treatment of workers in railroad construction. Finns' contribution to Trade Union Movement. Locking of halls, government intervention, police harassment of FOC members, etc. during war. The Labour Temple at 314 Bay St. was taken over by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Nymand and Milton. <250mn>
