Interview of Katri Matson by Raili Nieminen for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Katri Matson was born in Säkkijärvi, Finland (then belonged to Russia), Viipuri district on April 11, 1902. She came to Canada by a ship called “Gungsholm” on September 30, 1924. She landed at Halifax and was met there by her aunt's husband Huugo Siren. She lived in Hearst for one winter, then moved to Nakina where she lived for fourteen years. Her husband worked for the railway for 25 cents per hour. Sanna Kannasto stopped in Nakina on a speaking tour, and started a Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) branch there. There were 15-20 members at first. Matson was a member of the FOC in Nakina. Speakers who came included A.T. Hill, Untamo Makela, and Martii Hendrickson, who later moved to Karjala. Matson moved to Geraldton and lived there for four years, then moved to Port Arthur in 1942. She was not a member of the FOC in Port Arthur. The Nakina branch was involved in a lot of plays and solo concerts by members. Teachers, doctors took part in festivals and supported FOC activities. Musicians included Einar Pätäri, Pärtty, and Einar Hillman. The FOC hall was owned by the FOC, but the land it was on was rented. The FOC was founded in 1927-28; at first there was just a dance platform, and the hall was completed in 1932 or 33. Sports Club 'Into' directed by George Caivo and Onni Mannila. Matson wrote articles and poems for “Liekki” newspaper as long as it existed and now writes into “Viikkosanomat.” <25mn>
