Interview of Martin Magnuson by Einar Nordstrom for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Martin Magnuson was born in 1909 in Sweden. The came to Canada in the fall of 1930, and went to Saskatchewan to work at farms. He went to Port Arthur in the fall of 1932, and worked occasionally at bushcamps but was mainly unemployed. He was active in the unemployed movement. the Lumber Workers Industrial Union (LWIU), and the Scandinavian Worker's Club. He notes that the popular speaker's podium at the time was an old boiler in a vacant lot adjacent to Cumberland St. and Lake St. He became a miner in 1935, which was his source of employment for 33 years. He enlisted in army, but had difficulty getting accepted. Upon his return from war he continued mining, occasionally in Quebec and then Northeastern Ontario. The tape concludes with the interviewer summarizing correspondence. <30mn>
