Bergman was born in Närpes, Finland (Swede-Fin). He immigrated to Canada in 1928, landed in Halifax, and travelled by train to Port Arthur. He worked initially for a fisherman in McDermmit, Ont., then operated his own boat out of Cloud Bay. He speaks of the difficulties of fishing in Lake Superior, particularly the lamprey problem.
