This core documentation was compiled and itemized by Statistics Canada and its precursor, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics.
Sub-series also consists of similar materials used for various census tests, as compiled by Statistics Canada and its precursor the Dominion Bureau of Statistics.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the sub-series.Custodial history:Majority of sub-series' forms and instructions dating from 1871 to 1971 were transferred from Statistics Canada to the Public Archives in November 1971., 1911 and 1956 enumeration area descriptions moved to Census maps and geography sub-series (Arc. Ref. R233-113-7-E; 2019 December). The Register of Parishes for Quebec ca. 1852 moved to Census internal working documents sub-series (Arc. Ref. R233-38-8-E; 2019 December).Arrangement note:Sub-series arranged, in December 2019, into sub-sub-series according to year of census or census test (except when multiple years were originally grouped together by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics). Note a collection of agriculture schedules for most Census years 1926-1971 are in RG31 1571.Availability of other formats note:Instructions to various census personnel for census years 1860, 1871, 1881, 1886, 1891, 1901, 1911, 1921, 1926, 1931, 1936, 1941, 1946 are also available in Library and Archives Canada's library collection, many in e-book format available online; search library catalogue using keywords 'census' and 'instructions' as well as the desired census year.Accruals:Further accruals are expected for later census years.Related material:1986 Census: example questionnaires in ca. 30 languages used by Statistics Canada's Eastern and Northern Ontario regional offices during the 1986 census may be found in box 46 of accession 2004-00577-7.
