Fonds consists of office files including correspondence, general information and various programmes; chronological files; instructional material; financial material; files created by L.E. Lefaive, relating to the 1972 and 1974 Canada-Soviet series, the International and Development Committees, meetings, and other subjects.

Fonds also consists of video material depicting the 1974 Canada (WHA)-Russia Hockey series.

In addition, fonds includes photographic material depicting various activities related to hockey in Copper Cliff, London, and Toronto, Ontario; a group photo of Canada's National Hockey Team, Moscow, 1969; Lou Lefaivre, Chairman of the International Committee, Hockey Canada, presenting Olympic Coins to Frank Fredrickson (Captain of the Winnipeg Falcons, winners of the 1920 Olympic Hockey Title) during the 1974 Canada-Soviet Hockey series.

Hockey Canada : Hockey Canada, a sports organization, was created in 1969 on the recommendation of the federal government's Task Force on Sport. An umbrella organization representing the various constituencies interested in hockey and hockey policy (the federal government, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, the Canadian NHL clubs, and the NHL Players Association), Hockey Canada was founded as a response to the general lack of success of Canadian amateur teams in international competition from the late 1950s on. Its founding reflected the growing popular sentiment that Canada should be represented by its best players -- professionals.

Hockey Canada's mandate has been twofold: the development of teams to represent Canada in international competition; and fostering the development of skills and competence among Canadian hockey players. The first part of this mandate has been more in the public eye. Initial negotiations with the International Ice Hockey Federation to allow the use of professionals proved fruitless, and Canada withdrew from international competition in 1970. This boycott proved effective in that the USSR agreed to the now-famous 1972 series between the Soviet national team and Canadian NHL players.

Subsequent projects of Hockey Canada have included organizing the 1974 World Hockey Association series against the USSR, the Canada Cup tournaments, and the teams sent to the Olympic Games since 1980 and to the annual world championships.

General note:

Most of the fonds was received in 1979 from Hockey Canada. The annual report for 1969-1970; material for the Board of Directors meeting, 30 September 1970; coaches program, 1971; and reports, memoranda and newsletters, n.d., 1970-1972, were transferred in 1977 from the Liberal Party of Canada records. The L.E. Lefaive series (volumes 18 and 19) was transferred from the Government Archives Division in 1991. The GAD had received this series in 1980 from National Health and Welfare along with the records of the Canadian Hockey Review.
