Fonds consists of correspondence of William Warren Baldwin and his son Robert Baldwin, 1807-1815, transcripts, 8 cm; letters of Robert Baldwin to his wife and son-in-law, 1850-1855, 66 pages; a summons to William Warren Baldwin from the Legislative Council, 1843, 2 pages; letter from J. Buck to William Baldwin, 1844, 3 pages; correspondence from Robert Baldwin to William Lyon Mackenzie, 1850 and from Marshall Spring Bidwell, 1837, photostat, 11 pages; correspondence from R. Baldwin to his son Robert and his Aunt Sullivan, 1835, 7 pages; corespondence and other papers of William Warren Baldwin and Robert Baldwin, 1791-1960; and correspondence between Robert Baldwin, wife and children, his son-in-law, John Ross, and political colleagues, 20 cm. Also included in fonds is microfilmed material consisting of letterbooks containing legal opinion and advice by Robert Baldwin, 1839-1849. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-741 and M-742.

Also included in the fonds is graphic material including 1 photograph of a lithograph depicting a view of the Ursuline Convent at Québec, and a 1 caricature print of John Ross, author of `Voyage to Baffin's Island', by Alfred Croquis.

Baldwin, W. W. (William Warren), 1775-1844 : William Warren Baldwin (1775-1844) was a physician, lawyer and politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly for Upper Canada, 1820-1824 and 1828-1830, and became a leading member of the Reform Party. In 1836 he served as the President of the Constitutional Reform Society. Summoned to the Legislative Council late in 1843, he died before he could take his seat.

Robert Baldwin was born in York (now Toronto) 12 May 1804 to Mr. and Mrs. William Warren Baldwin. During his lifetime he was a Canadian statesman, and leader of the movement for representative government in Canada. In 1836, as a recognized leader of reform in Upper Canada, Robert Baldwin was appointed by Sir Francis Bond Head to the executive council, but he resigned in a few weeks when it became apparent that the governor had no intention of acceding to the demands of the reformers. In England, in 1836, Baldwin sent to the colonial secretary a memorandum that was the first clear enunciation of the tenet of responsible government for Canada. Shortly after his return to Canada in 1837, he served as mediator between Head and the rebels; as a moderate reformer, he had opposed the faction of William Lyon Mackenzie in the rebellion of that year. Again (1841) he hopefully accepted appointment to the executive council under Lord Sydenham, only to resign when the governor showed no disposition to grant responsible government. As a member of the assembly, Baldwin led the opposition group and increased his influence, particularly by effecting an alliance with the French in Lower Canada, whom Sydenham had ignored in forming his council. After the reunion of Upper and Lower Canada in 1841, Baldwin and Louis Hippolyte LaFontaine were allowed to form their first coalition government (1842) under Sir Charles Bagot. With Bagot's death and the arrival (1843) of Sir Charles Metcalfe as governor, the first Baldwin-LaFontaine government resigned, but in the elections of Dec., 1847, the reformers won an overwhelming vote. As a consequence, the second Baldwin-LaFontaine ministry (1847-1851) was formed; it is often called ""the great ministry." Baldwin died at Spadina, near Toronto, 9 December 1858. "Robert Baldwin."
