Bell, Matthew, 1769-1849 : Matthew Bell was a merchant at Quebec. He later moved to Trois Rivières where, in partnership with David Munro, he leased the Forges de St Maurice from 1799-1834. A holder of numerous minor offices, he was as well Member of the Legislative Assembly, 1800-1804 and 1809-1814, and of the Legislative Council of Lower Canada, 1823-1838.

In 1812 he was appointed a captain of militia and embodied a troop of light cavalry as part of the 3rd Battalion, Quebec militia. After 27 July the unit was independent. It served during the Rebellion of 1837-38 and disappeared shortly thereafter.
