Item is a copy of a letter to Thomas MacLean enclosing Crooks' recollections of the War of 1812 in which he served as a captain in the 1st Regiment, Lincoln Militia. The major portion is concerned with the Battle of Queenston Heights.

Crooks, James, 1778-1860 : James Crooks, born in Scotland, settled at Niagara in about 1791. After the War of 1812 he operated a grist and paper mill in West Flamboro, the first paper mill in Upper Canada. Elected member of the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada in 1821, he was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1831 and was reappointed in 1841 to the Legislative Council of the united Province of Canada.
