New Brunswick. Militia. Westmoreland : During the later half of the 18th Century and the first half of the 19th Century, the military defence of the British North American provinces was provided by the British Army and a local militia. Organized on a county-basis, the militia was composed of all male residents between the ages of 16 and 60, who were liable for serivce. In times of peace, this was limited to an annual muster and drill, but in cases of emergency or war, such portion as deemed necessary might be enrolled for the period. At various times, provisions were made for a more universal service remained the principle. The basic units of organization for the militia were the battalion, commanded by a lieutenant-colonel, and the company, commanded by a captain.
