ca. 2 film reels.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of textual records and scrapbooks of press-clippings of the New York American Hockey Club and outstanding sports personalities, microfilm, 4 reels. Also included are scrapbooks of Hugh Joseph concerning the National Hockey Association, 1911-1913, and other sports, including lacrosse and boxing, microfilm, 1 reel; correspondence of Harry Watson and John L. Scholes, 2.5 cm, and the scrapbook of Leila Brooks, microfilm, reel M-2822. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-1972 to M-1975, M-2811 and M-2822.
Fonds also contains moving image recordings. Included are interviews with Jack Adams, President and General Manager of Detroit Red Wings, President of Central Professional Hockey, and President of Olympic Arena, produced by CHML television station in Halifax, 2 April 1979. Interviewer is Bud Lynch. Topics of discussion include: the history of professional hockey in Canada, hockey clubs, players, trades, fights, gambling, the farm system, women in sports, promoters, and the future of hockey. In addition, moving images include a compilation on the life of Howie Morenz; two films documenting the 1975 Stanley Cup Championship, and the 1972 Canada Soviet Series; and six short items shot in 1959 and 1960 that deal with Hockey Hall of Fame functions. Titles include: Hockey Hall of Fame Dinner; Hockey Hall of Fame Visit; Hockey Hall of Fame Election of Players; Jack Dennett Interviews D. Keates and H. Gardner; Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies; and Opening of Hockey Hall of Fame.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Hockey Hall of Fame : The Hockey Hall of Fame was established in Toronto in 1957 through the co-operation of the National Hockey League and the Canadian National Exhibition. It was initially housed in one large room of the Sports Hall of Fame building on the C.N.E. Grounds. By 1960 more space was needed to accommodate the growing number of hockey displays and mementos.
Through the efforts of the National Hockey League, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, the Canadian National Exhibition and the City of Toronto, a new building for the Hockey Hall of Fame was designed and built in 1960-61. The Sports Hall of Fame was housed in one wing of this new structure. The first curator of the Hockey Hall of Fame was R.W. "Bobby" Hewitson (1892-1969). Upon Mr. Hewitson's retirement in 1967, Mr. M.H. "Lefty" Reid of Scarboro, Ontario became curator.Additional information:General note:Textual material was microfilmed in 1970 and 1973 by the National Archives from originals in the possession of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Toronto, Ont. The photocopy was also made in 1973. The scrapbook of Leila Brooks was microfilmed from originals in the possession of Mrs. Cliff Beach, Owen Sound, Ontario.
Photographic material (1,161 photographs) have been deaccessioned to the Hockey Hall of Fame and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
Moving image recordings were acquired in 1979 and 1980 from the Hockey Hall of Fame. Material was copied and returned to donor.Custodial history:Interviews with Jack Adams were compiled as part of a lifetime project by Dean Robinson of Stratford, Ontario.
