Fonds consists of subject files of correspondence and memoranda, arranged alphabetically by subject within each of five chronological series, 1935-1964, vols. 1-127, 138-187, 18.4 m; speeches, personal and business papers of H.H. Hannam 1933-1964, vols. 127-134, 75 cm; speeches and original data of Dr. E.C. Hope, staff economist of the C.F.A., 1949-1959, vols. 135-137, 30 cm. Photographs, undated, depict activities of H.H. Hannam, President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, between 1939 and 1965.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture : The Canadian Federation of Agriculture had its beginning at a gathering of representatives of various farmers' organizations held during the Royal Winter Fair at Toronto in the autumn of 1935. The formation of this body was largely an attempt to fill a widely felt need for the organization of agriculture on a national scale. It was first known as the "Canadian Chamber of Agriculture". J.H. Wesson, then president of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, became the first president and H.H. Hannam, then secretary of the United Farmers Cooperative, was selected as vice president of the organization. Mr. Hannam was elected president in 1939 and served in that position until his death in 1964.

In its present form the Canadian Federation of Agriculture is a national farm organization which gives joint and unified representation to major agricultural interests in Canada and attempts to reconcile and express the views, knowledge, and experience of the various types of organizations of agricultural producers, including direct membership groups, cooperatives, marketing boards, commodity groups, and other rural organizations.

The activities of the Federation have taken many varied forms. It was one of the joint sponsors of the National Farm Radio Forum. During World War II, it was represented on seventeen boards and advisory committees at Ottawa and played a major role in making possible Canada's remarkable wartime food production. It has been very closely associated with such international organizations as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Federation of Agricultural Producers.
