Fonds consists of microfilmed material: selected diaries, notes and correspondence of Sir Charles and Lady Chichester, relating to his service in Canada 1822-1825 and 1838-1847. Chichester's diaries include comments on the aftermath of the Rebellion of 1837. Included are several of Lady Chichester's diaries, some sketches of military men and military life, and some theatre programmes. This material is located on microfilm reels A-514 to A-516.

Chichester, Charles, Sir, 1795-1847 : Sir Charles Chichester a native of Devonshire, began his career in the British Army in 1811 and saw service in Europe, India and America with the 60th Regiment. Knighted in 1840, he commanded the 81st Regiment during its service in the West Indies and America until his death at Toronto in 1847. While stationed in Trinidad, he served as Acting Governor, 1842-1843.

Textual records (Electronic) The finding aid provides a summary list of the diaries and correspondence selected for filming. The typed list describes diaries on reel A-514 from August 1822 to January 1840 and diaries, addresses and notes on reel A-515 from December 1841 to February 1848. Description of material on reel A-516 includes newscuttings, letters between Sir Charles and Lady Chichester, 1822 to 1825 and from 1841 to 1847 as well as diaries, drawings, 1823, and programmes, 1843 to 1867. The originals of microfilmed material were in the possession of Mrs. Bonaparte Wyse and copied through the courtesy of the National Register of Archives, London. The originals were subsequently deposited in the Humberside County Record Office, Beverly, Northumberside, England.
