Actors portray veteran arctic surveyor Wally McLean and a young man on a train heading north to Churchill, Manitoba, to do research. Through the windows of the train, we view blended images of slum housing, Inuit people, outdoor labourers, oil wells and bleak winter scenes. Alternating with these images is footage of Eskimo art and archival photos of gold diggers. Visuals are accompanied by the overlapping voices of McLean, the researcher, a nurse in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, an information officer and two university professors. The voices describe experiences in the North and express contrasting visions of the future, ranging from the concept of the North as "a vast, outdoor playground" to the idea that it is the battleground for man's war against nature. <30mn>Subjects:ARCTIC REGIONS~INUIT~NORTHERN CANADA~RADIO BROADCASTING HISTORY ~GOULD, GLENN~MCLEAN, WALLYLanguage:EnglishNotes:Detailed holdings information: -
