4 paintings oil on canvas.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Collection consists of a pamphlet, The Chivalry of the Mercantile Marine, Illustrated by Passages in the Life of Captain John Lennon, by David Burn, 1841. The main item is an account of the fight between the Hibernia, under Captain Lennon, and the Comet in 1814, 38 pages. An issue of the Lancet, 1847, containing an article by Dr. Edward Moore concerning the lung wound which Lennon had suffered in 1769, 8 pages.
Collection also includes four paintings depicting the action between the British merchant ship "Hibernia" and the American privateer "Comet" which took place in the West Indies on 11 January 1814.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Lennon, John, 1768-1846 : Captain John Lennon, merchant navy officer, was born in 1768 and died 1846.
