Fonds consists of extracts relating to Newfoundland from the diaries of Benjamin Lester, 1761-1764; the letterbooks of his son-in-law and successor George Garland Sr., 1794-1832; and letterbooks of his grandson John Bingley Garland, ?-1832. Benjamin Lester's diary includes an account of the French occupation of Trinity, July 1762, as well as specifications for the construction of naval vessels rated from 20 to 100 guns. Included in John B. Garland's letterbook are proceedings of the Newfoundland House of Assembly, 1834. This material is located on microfilm reel A-574.

Benjamin Lester and Company : Benjamin Lester (1724-1802) was the son of Francis Lester (1668-1738), a cooper and merchant of Poole, England who traded in wine, fish and timber in Portugal and Newfoundland. The firm of Benjamin Lester and Company carried on business at Trinity and other ports of Newfoundland until 1849, when John Bingley Garland (fl. 1820-1849), first Speaker of the Newfoundland House of Assembly, left for England to attend to family matters.
