Fonds consists of papers relating to the various business enterprises undertaken by Henry Rowland Hanning, including account books, 1854-1901, pay sheets, 1838-1858, together with a carding book, 1856 and a trade sheet, 1839, as well as various records for the St. Augustine Church Sunday School, 1861-1887 (vols. 1-3).

Hanning, Henry Rowland, d. 1904 : Henry Rowland Hanning, born in Cork, Ireland, was a sea captain before he came to Canada. He settled in the Nicolet Falls area after having worked on the Quebec to Richmond Line of the Grand Trunk Railway. He built a saw mill which was later enlarged to a stave and a cooperage factory and other related business, such as seasoning of wood. He also built barrels for the export of potash to England.

At his death his house property and many of his papers passed in the hand of H.I. Elliot, a long time associate.
