Fonds consists of volume 1 which was revised by the author as late as 1888, and elaborates incidents in the earlier journals. Volumes 2 to 8 have exact weather notations and meteorological abstracts; statistics are commercial or demographic, and include shipping lists, commodity prices, and mortality rates. All volumes have daily entries with commentary on current events, but there is little specific reference to Dorwin business interests or his immediate family. The eight journals contain daily entries, newspaper clippings, and several illustrative prints.

Dorwin, Jedediah Hubbell, 1792-1883 : Jedediah Hubbell Dorwin, a native of Vermont, moved to Montreal in 1816 where he established himself as a grocer and trader in fish and other foodstuffs. He was also employed as an insurance agent, mill owner and lumber merchant. As well, he had a business interest as shareholder in the steam vessel William Annesly.

Dorwin had an avid interest in meteorology and current affairs and in 1861 patented a mercurial barometer. Dorwin also collected vast quantities of news clippings and patent records, which he used along with his journal entries for reminiscences published in the Montreal Star.
