Fonds consists of papers which comprise a copy of a petition, dated 8 August 1881, and a copy a letter to the Secretary of State, 11 August 1881, from Messrs. Pagnullo and St. Jean, lawyers for the school, transmitting a copy of the petition for presentation to the Governor General in Council. The petition was presented in 1881 by the Montreal School of Medicine and Surgery to the Marquis of Orne, complaining of alleged unfair practices and illegal teaching of medicine by the Montreal branch of Laval University, Quebec and requesting the disallowance of an Act to increase the powers of Laval.

Montreal School of Medicine and Surgery : The Montreal School of Medicine and Surgery was incorporated in 1845 by an Act of Parliament (8 Vic., Cap. 81). It was empowered to give lectures and instruction in medicine and surgery and to maintain a public medical school.
