Item is a diary kept by Robert Mathews of a journey from Quebec to Niagara and Detroit, dated February to July 1787. Includes observations on people, the settlements and fortifications, and the native peoples.

Mathews, Robert, fl. 1761-1793 : Robert Mathews was a military secretary to Govenor Frederick Haldiman. He joined the 8th Regiment in 1761 as an ensign and rose to captain's rank by 1777. From 1783 to 1793, he served as major of the 53rd Regiment. Following his promotion to lieutenant-colonel in 1793, he became Major of Chelsea Hospital, London.
