Putnam, Rufus, fl. 1783-1803 : Rufus Putman, a self-taught surveyor, served as an engineer and officer in the rebel army during the Revolutionary War, attaining the rank of Brigadier-General in 1783. He was appointed Surveyor of Western Lands in 1785, and helped organize the Ohio Company. From 1796 to 1803, he was Surveyor General of the United States.
