Fonds consists of records of the Ottawa Little Theatre, including files on its history, administration, finances, subject files, programmes, printed material, Eastern Ontario Drama League, Dominion Drama Festival, Annual National Canadian Playwriting Competitions, and miscellaneous playscripts, [ca. 1884], 1890, 1906-1989.

The fonds contains photographs which depict activities of the Ottawa Little Theatre, including photos showing people associated with the Theatre, [1930-ca.1960]; a poster for the 25th Annual Canadian Playwriting Competition, 1962-1963; and a Dominion Drama Festival brooch, [1933]. The fonds also contains a stage plan for the Theatre, 1927; and plans for additions and alterations to a church on the corner of King Edward Avenue and Besserer Street, 1927.

Ottawa Little Theatre : In 1913, the Ottawa Women's University Club formed a society for "the study of production of Dramatic Art". It was named the Ottawa Drama League, reflecting its affiliation with both the American and British Drama Leagues. The group obtained the use of the auditorium of the Victoria Memorial Museum in the fall of 1915 but was ousted the following February when the Parliament Buildings burned and the Museum became the temporary chamber for the House of Commons. The group returned to the Museum in 1923. In 1927, the League was incorporated under a Provincial Charter and acquired the Eastern Methodist Church on King Edward Avenue as its permanent home.

From 1933 to 1937, the Ottawa Drama League hosted the Dominion Drama Festivals. In 1936, the League established the first of its workshop series and in 1949 was invited to perform at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1939, the League held what was to become the first in a continuing Annual National Canadian Playwriting Competition.

In 1952, the Ottawa Drama League changed its name by letters patent to the Ottawa Little Theatre.

After a fire destroyed the Ottawa Little Theatre's home in the Methodist Church in 1970, an intensive building fund drive raised enough money for the construction of a theatre on the old church site and on February 1972 the Ottawa Little Theatre opened its 59th season in the new building.

Received between 1963 and 1990 from Mrs. B. Burritt, Mrs. J.R. Jackson, Mrs. Roy MacGregor Watt, Penelope Feather, Leonie Gardner, Lorraine St. Laurent and the National Arts Centre.

Custodial history:

The Ottawa Little Theatre fonds has been removed from the holdings of Library and Archives Canada in and has been transferred to the City of Ottawa Archives in 2015.
