4 photographs b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of correspondence, miscellaneous printed matter, and a scrapbook. The bulk of this collection is comprised of letters (n.d., 1943-1945) which Ms. White had forwarded to her parents while serving overseas during WW II. Frank, humorous, and highly informative, they describe in detail the camaraderie of the naval nursing profession, as well as their working conditions, living accommodations, and social activities while stationed at H.M.C.S. "NIOBE". The letters also touch upon medical treatment for the wounded, rationing, "D." Day, Canadians marrying abroad, "VE" Celebrations in London, and leave excursions in Britain. Some military correspondence is included in the scrapbook and among the miscellaneous material, as well as press clippings and printed souvenirs.
Fonds also includes photographs that depict a visit by the Hon. Vincent Massey, High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom, to the shore establishment HMCS Niobe, Glasgow, Scotland, May 1945 and group photographs of personnel and medical staff of the shore establishment HMCS Niobe, Glasgow, Scotland, 1944.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:White, M. Amy : M. Amy White, navy nursing sister, a native of Ontario, graduated from Lindsay Collegiate Institute in 1918. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E.A. White, Fenelon Falls, Ont., she pursued a career in nursing and subsequently graduated from the Toronto General Hospital. Ms. White joined the Royal Canadian Naval Nursing Service as a Nursing Sister in December, 1942. After an initial 4 months posting to H.M.C.S. "Stadacona", she was selected for overseas hospital service at H.M.C.S. "NIOBE", a Royal Canadian Naval Base located near Greenock, Scotland. During a 28 months tour of duty at H.M.C.S. "NIOBE", Ms. White was promoted to the rank of Sister-in-Charge at the base hospital. Her overseas service ended on July 3, 1945 and she was subsequently posted to H.M.C.S. "Cornwallis". Ms. White received an honourable discharge from the Royal Canadian Naval Nursing Service on November 15, 1945.Additional information:General note:Received in 1987 from M.
