This live coverage of the 1962 federal election by CTV Television Network is anchored by Harvey Kirck from the newsroom of the "Telegram" newspaper in Toronto. Alternating with reports from the election central desk are interviews, telephone reports, footage of campaigns, speeches and regular news broadcasts by CTV news anchor Don Parrish including a sportscast by Joe Crysdale. At election central, [Doug Johnson] assists Kirck in reviews of national and provincial standings for each political party, updates of statistics on metropolitan Toronto area ridings and bulletins on ridings across the country that are of particular interest. Kirck receives telephone calls at intervals from [George Brummel], "Telegram" reporter, stationed at Liberal Party of Canada headquarters in Ottawa, on area statistics and the activities of Liberal leader Lester B. Peason; Peter Dempson, "Telegram" editor stationed in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, on the activities of Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker; and [Art Leonard] in Montreal, Quebec, on the Social Credit success in that province. In a video report from CJOH, Ottawa, Charles Lynch compares results to the previous election of 1958. Interviews by Bob Evans include "Telegram" staff members David Grenier, financial editor; Charlie Nichols, editor; Frank Tumpane, columnist; [Leon Kostner], ethnic editor; [Lorrie McKecknie], writer and Dorothy Howarth, reporter. Evans also interviews successful candidates Andrew Brewin, NDP; Dr. Stanley Haidasz, Liberal; and Minister of Public Works, David Walker, defeated in Rosedale, Toronto. Other interviews include: Johnson with "Telegram" labour columnist Frank Drea; Kirck with defeated Liberal candidates Marvin Gelber and David Hahn; and Brian Nolan with Pearson at the Chateau Laurier hotel in Ottawa. Speeches by party leaders Lester B. Pearson, Liberal Party of Canada; Robert Thompson, Social Credit Party of Canada.~Tommy Douglas, New Democratic Party and Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker, Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, reveal disappointment that no party has a clear majority. Additional footage includes voters at metropolitan Toronto polls and election campaigns by Diefenbaker and Douglas. Commentary and analysis during the coverage refers to the record turnout of voters; the defeat of Tommy Douglas in his riding; the poor showing of the New Democratic Party; the startling success of the Social Credit party, especially under Réal Caouette in Quebec; major issues such as unemployment and the devaluation of the dollar; the "neck and neck race for power in Canada"; and speculation on Diefenbaker's plans when it becomes apparent there will be a minority Conservative government.
