Also included are William Hamilton papers, 1804-1862; correspondence 1804-1862; subject files, 1801-1862; notebooks and diaries, 1808-1855; lejens and stock books, 1829-1846; Jedediah Prendegast Merritt papers 1838-1897; Chace-Prendegast Family Papers, 1782-1848; and Merritt Family Papers in the Archives of Ontario, 1780-1873. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-205, M-728 to M-735.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Merritt (family) : Thomas Merritt, army and militia officer, and office holder, was born 28 October 1759 in Bedford, New York. He married Mary Hamilton in 1781 and had six children. Merritt died 12 May 1842 at St. Catharines, Upper Canada.
William Hamilton Merritt, soldier, merchant, and politician, was born 3 July 1793 at Bedford, Westchester County, New York. He married Catharine Prendergast in 1815 and had 6 children.
William Chace, was a Rhode Island merchant. His daughter Penelope (1774-1845), married Dr. Jedediah Prendegast (1766-1848). The Prendegasts came to Twelve Mile Creek in 1808, but returned to the United States in 1812, leaving their Upper Canadian interests in the hands of Thomas Merritt. These were taken over by W.H. Merritt in 1815 when he married their only child, Catharine.Additional information:General note:The original papers were received in 1914 from Miss Catherine Merritt.
