Shubenacadie Canal (N.S.) : Building of the 53-mile-long Shubenacadie Canal was begun in 1826, with the object of providing a waterway across the province of Nova Scotia to link Halifax harbour with the Minas Basin arm of the Bay of Fundy. The coming of the canal labourers and the expenditure of thousands of pounds on its construction contributed greatly to the growth of the town Dartmouth, N.S.

By the time that the Canal was completed in 1861, however, the railways carried most of the freight and the Canal was largely a financial failure.

The scrapbook in File 1 was received in 1891 from Murdoch McRae of the Department of Public Works, Ottawa. The photocopies in File 2 were received in 1979, through the National Archives' London Office, from the Thomas Telford material (catalogue reference T.SC1 - T.SC8) in the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, Ironbridge, Salop., England.
