He received a commission in the British army at age 11. Talbot came to Upper Canada as the personal secretary to Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1791. In 1803, Colonel Talbot was granted 5,000 acres of land just west of Kettle Creek, at Port Talbot as payment for services to Simcoe. As part of the grant arrangement, Talbot was to receive two hundred acres of land for each settler that he located in the original grant. Talbot built mills and established thousands of settlers in his "principality" and controlled the settlement of London, Ontario. Under his administration, the "Talbot Settlement" grew to cover over 65,000 acres of Southwestern Ontario. Talbot died in 1853 in London.
