O'Connor, Daniel, 1797-1858 : Daniel O'Connor, businessman, was born in 1797 in Wexford County, Ireland. The O'Connor family was among the first families to settle in Ottawa and Colonel John By, himself, encouraged Daniel O'Connor and his family to settle there ca. 1827. O'Connor was one of the first justices of the peace in Bytown and was also a judge of the court of requests appointed by the government. For a time, O'Connor was the only Irish magistrate in the town. In addition to these posts, though, O'Connor was also treasurer for Carleton County (1842-1858) and Chairman of the Grammar Board of Carleton County as well as the Health Board. In 1834, he ran unsuccessfully against Thomas McKay in the first election of a member to represent the County of Russell in the Legislature of Upper Canada. Daniel O'Connor was also a prominent merchant in Bytown. He died in 1858.
