Fonds consists of correspondence, 1827-1828, and a copy of a report to Colonel By, 1828 pages 1-52. An annotated pamphlet Notices of the Rideau Canal, printed at the Patriot Office, Kingston, 1832, attributed to Mr. Phillips, a contractor at Black Rapids, pages 53-72.

MacTaggart, John, 1798-1830 : John MacTaggart, engineer, was born in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, was educated in local schools, and began work with the prominent British engineering firm of John Rennie. On Rennie's recommendation, MacTaggart was appointed Clerk of the Works for the Rideau Canal. He was employed by Colonel By from 1826 to 1828, when he returned to Scotland with malaria. He also made recommendations concerning the Kingston Dockyard, the Welland Canal and the harbour in Burlington Bay.
