Fonds consists of correspondence between William Mickle and his father, Charles Julius, his brother Charles and other members of the family, all of London, England. The Letters relate to William's voyage to Upper Canada in 1830, a winter spent near Montreal, and his subsequent settlement in Upper Canada.

Mickle, William Julius, fl. 1810-1838 : William Julius Mickle arrived in North America from England in 1830. He landed in New York and after having looked for work both there and in Philadelphia proceeded to Montreal where he spent the winter. He travelled to Upper Canada in 1831 and bought land near Guelph where he settled. In 1832 he purchased additional land for his father and the rest of his family who he encouraged settle there. William died in 1838, however, his brother Charles became a lumber contractor and lived on part of his father's property. Charles built a house called Langholm and raised a family of six sons and six daughters.
