Pringle, Jacob Farand, 1816-1901 : Jacob Farand Pringle, militia officer, was born on 27 June 1816 in the City of Valenciennes, Dept. Nord, France and after coming to Upper Canada with his family in 1814, was educated at the Cornwall Grammar school from 1826 to 1833 by the Reverend H. Urquhart. After leaving school at the beginning of 1833, he passed as law student at Osgoode Hall and studied in the office of George S. Jarvis. He was admitted an attorney and passed as barrister in November 1838. He practised independently from 1841 until 1866 at which time he was appointed junior judge of the County Court of the united Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. When the Rebellion of 1837 broke out, a company of three officers and fifty men volunteered to go and occupy the fort at Coteau du Lac amongst which, Pringle was one. In 1838, he joined an independent company of artillery which his father had been ordered to raise at Cornwall.

He served as sergeant until the 27 May 1839 at which time it was disbanded. Pringle was made lieutenant of the company after it was reorganized and maintained that rank until November 1862 when he raised a company of infantry and obtained the rank of captain. This company was called up on active service in 1866 in response to the threatened Fenian invasion and remained on duty at Cornwall until 23 July of that year. Having been appointed junior judge, Pringle retired with his rank and in 1870 was made local master in Chancery followed by his appointment as judge in 1878 on the death of His Honour Judge Jarvis. By 14 March 1882, he was made local judge of the High Court. Throughout his career, Pringle was involved in the politics, the policing and the justice of the city of Cornwall and the united Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.
