Askin, John B., flourished 1837-1845 : John B. Askin, militia officer, was born in Detroit of an Irish father and an Indian mother. He immigrated to the London district and quickly became involved in the administration of justice in the area. He was appointed its first clerk of the court and during the Rebellion of 1837 and took a prominent role in fighting the rebels. On 30 December 1837, Askin was named major of the first battalion of the London militia and was promoted to colonel on 3 February 1838. He was active in bringing suspected and actual rebels to trial. He was a member of a court of inquiry at Tete de Pont which dealt with criminals of the Rebellion. In 1839, he was appointed Crown Lands Agent for the London District "including to the boundary of the Huron tract" and by 1845 he was a Clerk of the Peace in London, Canada West.
