Douglas, Sir Howard, 1776-1861 (family) : Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Douglas (d. 1789) relieved Quebec in 1776, after an abortive attempt the previous year. His naval career also included a term as Commander-in-Chief of the Halifax Station, 1783-1786. His son, Sir Howard Douglas (1776-1861) served with the Royal Artillery and as Commandant of the Royal Military College, Woolwich, before taking up the post of Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, 1823-1831. He left the Province in 1828 to work with the presentation of the British case on the Maine-New Brunswick boundary for arbitration.

Received at various times between 1908 and 1972. In 1972, original documents were acquired from Peter Eaton Limited, London, England.

Location of originals note:

Correspondence and related papers addressed to Sir Charles Douglas: transcribed in 1908 from the original held by the Douglas family. Sir Howard Douglas' account of the wreck of Phyllis (H.M. transport) photocopied in 1928 from the original held by Leo Harvey.
