Fonds consists of administrative files of the CASW's national office from its origins, including some files pre-dating its founding in 1926. It shows the functioning of the association from head office to the branches across Canada, its goals and achievements, its relations with other organizations in Canada such as the Canadian Welfare Council, and what part it played on an international basis. The fonds is divided into six series: Administrative files, Committees, Provincial associations and branches, Subject files, Organizations, and Conferences. Each series contains a wide variety of documents such as correspondence, minutes, memoranda, reports, printed matter and reference materials.

Canadian Association of Social Workers : In 1922, workers in the area of social welfare began to discuss the need for a Canadian association of professional social workers. Two years later, during a National Conference on Social Work, official steps were taken to create such an organization. A few volunteers started to draft by-laws and to recruit members in various municipal social workers' clubs. The CASW's by-laws were accepted by its members in 1926 and the first general meeting took place in 1928. The association's main publication, the Social Worker, first appeared in 1932. Originally most social workers were recruited into the profession either in Toronto or Montreal. These two cities then became the first two branches of many others all across Canada. In 1956, the association was incorporated.

Except for the Northwest Territories, there were at least one branch and an association of branches for each province, reflecting one of CASW's goals: representing the whole country. The CASW had no office until 1944, when it opened one in Ottawa. The first four committees created were membership, publication, placement service and service standards. They were all aimed at the association's primary concerns: to give social work a professional status through recognized standards and to help social workers obtain better working conditions. The association promoted a better education and training, working jointly with schools of social work and social welfare agencies in Canada, the United States and sometimes other countries.

The goals of the association have changed through the years. From concentrating on the social workers themselves, the association has increased the services offered to the clients. The CASW participated in many international conferences and aid programs.

General note:

Presented to the National Archives by the University of Calgary in 1986. The Canadian Association of Social Workers had donated their papers to the University in 1978.
A fair amount of photocopies were made for conservation purposes.
