1 postal cover.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of personal papers of Chesley William Carter documenting his activities in Newfoundland prior to his political career (1939-1949), his career as Liberal Member of Parliament for the Constituency of Burin-Burgeo from 1949 to 1966 and as Senator from 1966 to 1977.
The fonds also contains photographs of the Newfoundland War Memorial, 1967-1968, and the Liberal Association of Newfoundland, Ottawa.
Fonds also consists of a postal cover addressed to Mr. & Mrs. C.S. Carter, M.P. from D. Takahara [Japan], postmarked House of Commons, Canada, Jan. 14, 1952.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Carter, Chesley William, 1902-1994 : Born on July 29, 1902 at Pass Island, Newfoundland, Chesley William Carter was educated at Bishop Field College and Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland, and at Dalhousie and King's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia (B.Sc. Degree Physics and Chemistry). Carter served with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment from 1917 to 1919 and with the Canadian Army overseas from 1941 to 1946. Prior to entering politics he worked with the Newfoundland Department of Education and taught High School. He was Liberal Member of Parliament for the Constituency of Burin-Burgeo, Newfoundland from 1949 to 1966. He was called to the Senate in July 1966 and he retired in 1977.Additional information:General note:Acquired in 1980 from Chesley W. Carter.Custodial history:This fonds was deaccessioned on 29 April 2003.
